Mix of old and new at 2016 Quebec Winter Carnival

At the press conference announcing this year’s Quebec Winter Carnival programming, two teams faced off at Baie de Beauport to pelt each other in an exhibition game of yukigassen, the Japanese sport of organized snowball fighting. The game is one of several new activities that will be part of this year’s Carnival.

Former Quebec City Mayor Jean-Paul L’Allier died on Tuesday, January 5, following a brief illness. A civic funeral will be held on Saturday, January 9, at 2:00 p.m. at the Basilica-Cathedral Notre-Dame de Québec. There will be a limited number of seats available to the public.

The members of the Quebec Art Company (QAC) once again outdid themselves with La Cage aux Folles, an extravagant, consistently funny musical on stage at Holland School. The ambitious production required a huge cast of 24 actors, some ingenious sets and decors, and lots of glitzy and creative costuming.

On Friday, November the 13th, terrorist attacks on innocent people enjoying leisure time in restaurants, cafés, a concert hall and a sports arena in Paris claimed the lives of at least 129 people; 352 were injured, 99 of whom are in serious condition.

Teachers of the Central Québec School Board (CQSB) in the Quebec City area went on strike on Tuesday, October 27, with groups picketing in front of Quebec High School on Avenue Belvédère and St. Vincent Elementary School on Avenue Wolfe from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
