Strong current, wind, big floes and snow? No problem for ice canoe paddlers

On Feb. 4, at first glance, the weather felt just right: cloudy sky, snowing and warmer weather than the day before. Things were a tad rougher out on the St. Lawrence River. Nearly 50 teams of ice canoe paddlers were ready to face everything in the Winter Carnival Ice Canoe Race.

The sports teams from St. Patrick’s High School did not have a great week. Overall, the Irish basketball and hockey teams had a record of two wins and four losses.

Steven Cox fails to make it past the round of 32 in Finland

Quebec City ice cross racer Steven Cox did not have another dream weekend, Feb. 2-3. He finished third in his qualifying heat during the Red Bull Crashed Ice stop in Jyväsklä, Finland.

Cox, who finished seventh overall in St. Paul Minnesota two weeks ago, did not get the luck of the draw to start with.

Quebec City loves winter, cold and snow, and that’s never more true than during Carnival time. Besides the ever-present Bonhomme Carnaval, the premiere of BlackOut and the return of Phelipe Soldevila and his fellow artists at the Ice Palace, this year’s Winter Carnival has a lot to offer. A whopping 40 per cent of the program is new!

Quebec City’s ice cross downhill skater, Steven Cox, had the best weekend of his short career last weekend in St. Paul, Minnesota, site of the first Red Bull Crashed Ice event of the season.

High school basketball action

The Quebec High School Blazers senior boys have an important game on Jan. 25.

The Blazers (6-1) face the undefeated Carcajous from the Séminaire des Pères-Maristes (5-0). Tip-off is at 8:15 p.m. The Carcajous have two more games to play than QHS.
