EYE ON SPORTS: Trois-Rivières hosts World Jr. A Challenge…
Trois-Rivières is hosting the annual World Junior A Challenge, an elite junior men’s hockey tournament which includes two teams from Canada (Canada East and Canada West), Sweden and the United States. The Canadian teams have players who play on national junior A teams (AAA Junior in Quebec). On Dec. 7, Canada East opened the tournament with a 4-1 victory over the United States, while Sweden bounced Canada West 6-2. Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Addison Barger made history in game one of the 2025 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. On Oct. 24, Barger came off the bench to pinch hit for teammate Davis Schneider with the bases loaded. He then hit Dodgers reliever Anthony Banda’s fourth pitch over the right centre field wall for the first-ever grand slam by a pinch hitter in a World Series game. As of Oct. 27, Toronto and Los Angeles have one win each in the best-of-seven championship series.
Canada defeated Nigeria 4-1 at the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Oct. 19. Canada is in group D along with France and Samoa. The Canadian teenagers will play Samoa on Oct. 22 and France three days later. The gold medal game is scheduled for Nov. 8 in Rabat, Morocco. (screenshot)
Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies became the 21st player in Major League Baseball history to hit four home runs in one game on Aug. 28, when he and the Phillies thrashed the Atlanta Braves 19-4. He is the third player to achieve this feat in 2025, after the Athletics’ Nick Kurtz and Arizona’s Eugenio Suarez. Before this season, the last player to hit four home runs in one game was J.D. Martinez in 2017. Schwarber also became the fourth Phillie to do so, the last being Hall-of-Famer Mike Schmidt in 1976, against the Chicago Cubs. (Screenshot)
New Brunswick’s own Ron Turcotte, seen here with the famous Secretariat in 1973, passed away on Aug. 22, at his Drummond home, at the age of 84. Turcotte won 3,032 races in his career, including the 1973 Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes) with Secretariat. Turcotte had Secretariat win the Belmont by a record 31 lengths. However, in 1978, a spill during a race at Belmont Park left him paralyzed from the waist down, and he never raced again. August means the return of the Little League World Series. The global youth baseball event is held annually in Williamsport, Penn. Eight teams from the United States and eight international teams compete on two different fields, with games televised live by ESPN. Canada, represented by a team from Vancouver, lost its opening game, 4-0, against Venezuela on Aug. 15 before defeating Australia 12-0 on Aug. 17. The champions will be crowned Aug. 24.
