Beauport resident Yanick Hébert (left) brought his son Mathys, 10, to a family picnic marking the International Day Against Homophobia and honouring families of all compositions. "I wanted him to meet other kids whose parents are like me," says the elder Hébert.

In 1990, a family picnic like the one at the École de la Grande-Hermine in Limoilou would have been difficult to imagine. That year, on May 17, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from a global standard list of mental illnesses.
