The 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipes and Drums presented a rousing St. Andrew’s Day concert at Chalmers-Wesley United Church in November 2016. The original 78th Fraser Highlanders regiment was raised in Scotland in 1757, to fight with the British in the Seven Years’ War. When the regiment was disbanded in Quebec in December 1763, each man was offered a grant of land if they stayed in Canada. Many settled in what was originally named Fraserville (now Rivière-du-Loup) and in Murray Bay (now La Malbaie). Several modern-day re-enactment groups, such as the Quebec City group (above), is one of 13 garrisons of 78th Fraser Highlanders in North America. Their goal is to foster pride in Canada’s history, to promote Scottish history and culture, and to pass on these traditions to younger generations.
