Marie de Savonnières de La Troche (1616-1652) entered an Ursuline monastery in Tours, France, at age 14 and took the name Marie de Saint-Bernard. When the older Marie de l’Incarnation spoke of her dream of going to Canada, she wanted desperately to go along. Her parents opposed this dangerous undertaking, so she invoked Saint Joseph to convince them and subsequently adopted the name Marie de Saint-Joseph. A talented musician, the young woman brought a viola da gamba with her to New France, much to the delight of her future Indigenous students. (Photo by Shirley Nadeau)

Joe Lonergan captured this image of the spring tide waters of the St. Lawrence River covering Rue Dalhousie and the moat in front of the Royal Battery on the morning of April 30. He said this one is his favourite “because it captures so much: the wall, the moat, the ferry high in the water, the truck.” (Photo by Joe Lonergan)

LEGION REPORT: Royal Canadian Legion Quebec Branch holds 60th Provincial Convention in Quebec City

LEGION REPORT: Royal Canadian Legion Quebec Branch holds 60th Provincial Convention in Quebec City

Submitted by Jean Gervais, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 265

The 60th Provincial Convention of the Quebec Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion was held in Quebec City on May 17, bringing together over 100 volunteer directors representing all the branches of this movement whose mission is to support and recognize former military personnel.

The opening ceremony took place in the traditional military fashion. Former presidents and executive officers were escorted to their places of honour to the sound of the bagpipes, under the direction of the sergeant-at-arms.

Participants then paraded from the Québec Inn, where the convention was being held, to the Royal Canadian Legion, Lt. Col. J. Charles Forbes RMWO Quebec, Branch 265, on Boul. Hamel.

A ceremony was held on site to commemorate those who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives during conflicts. Veterans laid wreaths at the foot of the Korean War Memorial.

Comrade Thomas D. Irvine, C.D., president of the Quebec Command, recited the Act of Remembrance.

Attendees had the privilege of meeting guest speaker Brig. Gen. (ret.) Gaston Côté.

Discussions between comrades from different regions of Quebec were brief but highly instructive. The delegates returned to the Québec Inn to continue the convention with a busy schedule, including the election of a new executive committee.
