Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. – Come to the Morrin Centre and discover American Contra dance with Ès TRAD guest artists Tina Anderson (caller), Martin Aucoin (violin) and Mathieu Baillargeon (piano). This is the first of five events celebrating Quebec’s dance and music traditions, some of which are rooted in English-speaking communities that have helped shape our province’s cultural landscape. Sunday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. – The bilingual and ecumenical opening service for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity takes place at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Rue Cook in Old Quebec. The theme of the Week is “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling” (Ephesians 4:4). All are welcome.
Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 10:30 a.m. there will be a Hymn Sing at Saint Brigid’s Home, 1645 Chemin Saint-Louis.
Friday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m., there will be a Taizé Evening of Prayer in front of the Cross at the Montmartre Centre de culture et de foi, 1669 Chemin Saint-Louis.

Sunday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. – Between a Sock and a Harp’s Lace: A Bilingual Poetry Workshop will take place at the Morrin Centre. This artistic experience will be facilitated by Vanessa Bell and Simon Brown. Through a series of zany and engaging exercises, you will get a sense of the generative potential of limitation – while having fun along the way! This activity is open to all, with no previous experience required. Free for Morrin members, $5 for the general public. Monday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. – Irish Heritage Quebec meets in McMahon Hall of St. Patrick’s Church, 1145 Ave. De Salaberry. Steve Cameron, Marc Hughes and Joe Lonergan will co-host a presentation titled Tom Sloane 1896-1976: Sillery’s Galtee Mountain Boy, the surprising story of a Tipperary man who, after his involvement in Ireland’s revolutionary period, 1916 to 1923, settled and raised a family in Sillery. All are welcome. If coming on foot, please arrive by 7:20 p.m. as the church door on De Salaberry will lock at 7:30. Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. – Pixels & Pages Book Club meets at the Morrin Centre Library. Come and discuss literature with other book lovers. January’s selection is The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman. This is a hybrid event; the book club will meet in the Library, but it is also possible to participate online via Zoom. Friday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. – It’s Classic Movie Night at Chalmers-Wesley United Church on Rue Ste-Ursule. This month’s film is the 1957 thriller Zero Hour! starring Dana Andrews, Linda Darnell and Sterling Hayden. The film was a remake of the Canadian television play Flight into Danger. The side door of the church opens at 6:30 p.m. and cartoons and newsreels of the day are shown before the main feature. Admission $5. There is a snack bar with fresh popcorn, soft drinks and sweets for sale.
Jan. 27 to March 1 – Le Mois Multi: Under the theme Sonoratures, sound art and literature come together on stage to echo the voices, whether shaken or powerful, carried by humans. A total of 17 cultural venues (including three new ones) will present some 50 shows, performances, workshops, and exhibitions featuring nearly 100 established and emerging artists. This second edition, curated by Christian Lapointe, promises to be dazzling, daring and festive. The stage is set for a journey into the depths of the senses. See article on page ….. for details.
Jan. 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. – The Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, directed by Clemens Schuldt, presents L’expérience Nils Wanderer at the Palais Montcalm. When German artist Nils Wanderer, a countertenor with a rare voice, takes the stage, a whole universe unfolds. And at the heart of it all: a moving, ethereal and visceral voice that washes over you like a wave. The OSQ also welcomes first violin, Sheila Jaffé, who will be making her debut. Sunday, Feb. 1 at 2:30 p.m. – Concerts Couperin presents Ce désir de profondeur at the Chapelle du Séminaire. The program, sung by mezzo-soprano Marie-Andrée Mathieu, accompanied by Stéphane Fontaine (clarinet) and Nathalie Tremblay (piano) and guest cellist Anne-Sophie Laliberté, includes two cycles of melodies by German Romantic composers Louis Spohr and Johannes Brahms, plus works by Quebec composers Éric Champagne and Nathalie Tremblay. Feb. 6 to 15 – The 72nd Quebec Winter Carnival offers a variety of activities and attractions for all ages, including two night parades featuring the carnival’s mascot, Bonhomme Carnaval, snow and ice sculptures that transform the city into a winter wonderland and canoe races across the frozen St. Lawrence River. Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. – Ballets Jazz Montréal present Joie de vivre at the Grand Théâtre. Choreographer Jo Stromgren depicts a character at the end of their life who revisits the key fragments of their life, exploring through them the mysteries of memory and the unspoken aspects of their history. Feb. 11 to 22 – The 66th Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament takes place at the Videotron Centre and the Guy Lafleur Pavilion, where the best youth (under-12) hockey players and teams on the planet will compete for the tournament’s top honours.
