As part of Suicide Prevention Week, Feb. 1–7, 2026, JH Partners hosted an informative online workshop focused on suicide prevention.
Presented by Lydia Jones of the Association québécoise de prévention du suicide (AQPS), the webinar explored how to foster hope in our community and deepen understanding of suicide by demystifying common myths, recognizing signs that someone may be vulnerable, learning how to talk about suicide and discovering resources to support ourselves and others.
Statistics show that each year in Quebec there are approximately 1,100 suicides, or about three deaths per day. This year’s Suicide Prevention Week theme, “Reach out, support hope,” reflects the importance of support, kindness and solidarity toward people in distress.
“Suicide prevention really starts with being able to talk about what’s going on. Whether it’s by lending a hand to others in times of need or being brave enough to accept help that’s offered to us, everyone can play a part in preventing suicide in their community,” said Jones.
Open conversations with loved ones and within our communities remain an essential part of prevention. Sometimes, offering a listening ear, providing support or guiding someone toward the right resources can help them weather a storm.
Help is available 24/7 in English. Support workers can be reached at 1-866-APPELLE (277-5335), by text at 535353 or online at suicide.ca.
