LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Canada,
I am one of the 75 million Americans who voted for Kamala Harris for president last November. I’m writing to express my dismay and solidarity as we all endure the actions of the new administration.
The president and his allies seem to believe their victory was a mandate for the divisive rhetoric of the campaign. Unfortunately, we are learning that it was not just rhetoric. Even more concerning, the checks and balances meant to safeguard our democracy are eroding as this administration pressures legislators and undermines judicial independence.
The recently imposed trade tariffs on Canada are not only shortsighted but also a betrayal of a strong friendship. They will do nothing but harm hardworking Canadians and Americans alike. As a resident of Maine and a frequent visitor to Old Québec and the Maritimes, I find this especially disheartening. I am embarrassed and ashamed of how the leaders I did not choose are treating your country and others. Even more frustrating is the reality that an estimated 89 million Americans of voting age did not participate in the election — potentially shaping a different outcome had they done so.
I hope you recognize that 75 million of us voted for Ms. Harris to uphold freedom of thought, encourage tolerance and defend personal autonomy from government overreach.
I recently heard that Prime Minister Trudeau suggested Canadians refrain from visiting the U.S. in response to these tariffs. I can’t blame him. Yet, I still long to visit your beautiful country. I hope that when I do, you will see me not as an extension of my government, but as an individual who values our shared history and friendship. Maybe we can come up with a special handshake or greeting to recognize kindred spirits across the border.
Looking forward to my next visit – here’s hoping for a warm welcome.
Sincerely,
Tracy Scheckel

SHEDquarters provides safe space for men who are caregivers
Submitted by Bill Cox*
Élise Arsenault, a master’s student in social work at Université Laval, has introduced the SHEDquarters as part of her academic work. It is a pilot project for English-speaking men in Quebec City who are caring for (or have cared for) a loved one.
A group of interested men at McGreevy Manor have joined the casual get-togethers twice a month, taking the opportunity to share skills, learn new hobbies, connect with other men who can relate to what they’re going through and find a supportive environment to help others while helping themselves along the way.
They have already been active with the building and painting of miniature wood Christmas trees that were sold to benefit Saint Brigid’s Guild. A morning was spent helping load boxes for the Quebec Community Christmas Hamper Campaign, and on Jan. 17, members visited Fire Station #15 on Avenue Maguire.
Élise Arsenault is very active with the group and the McGreevy men appreciate her efforts on their behalf.
