Fans began leaving gifts at the doorstep of Leonard Cohen’s house shortly after his death was announced on Thursday, and by Sunday, a vibrant, colourful tribute to the composer of “Hallelujah” had taken shape. The Montreal Gazette’s banner headline on Friday read simply: “Our man is gone.”

Leonard Cohen's music has taken him around the world, but in the end, he had to come home.

On the title track of Cohen's spine-tingling final album, You Want It Darker, released three weeks before his death, the 82-year-old singer states unambiguously: "I'm ready, my lord."
