Royal Canadian Legion Branch 265 marks Canada Day in Quebec City…
Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 265 celebrated Canada Day on July 1. For the record, every year several events are held to commemorate an important milestone in our country’s history. It was on July 1, 1867, that three British North American provinces – the Province of Canada (now Quebec and Ontario), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, were united into one federation called the Dominion of Canada. The ceremony, held at the branch office, began with a parade, followed by the raising of the flag. Participants were then invited to share grilled meats and the traditional Canada Day cake. At the corner of Rue Saint-Anselme and Rue Prince-Édouard, construction workers discovered an archeological site dating back to the 18th century. Archaeologists believe these skeletal remains are likely those of 23 British soldiers who died during the Battle of the Plains of Abraham or the Battle of Sainte-Foy, and of one child about a year old. In the Shadow of a Tree, one of Helen McNicoll’s final canvases before her death in 1915, is her most straightforward depiction of a caregiving relationship. The dappled shadows cast by a tree envelop the umbrella, pram, woman and baby, calling attention to what is revealed by light or concealed in the shadows. The exhibit can be seen at the MNBAQ until January 2025. (Photo by Shirley Nadeau)
