Marie de Savonnières de La Troche (1616-1652) entered an Ursuline monastery in Tours, France, at age 14 and took the name Marie de Saint-Bernard. When the older Marie de l’Incarnation spoke of her dream of going to Canada, she wanted desperately to go along. Her parents opposed this dangerous undertaking, so she invoked Saint Joseph to convince them and subsequently adopted the name Marie de Saint-Joseph.
