Mental Health Week: Sharing our stories, strengthening our community

Submitted by Verity Jordan, program co-ordinator

Mental Health Week, taking place the first week of May, is a time to reflect, connect and remember that mental health is an essential part of our overall well-being. This year, we have focused on something powerful: sharing real stories about mental health from our community.

Through our That’s Life: Our Stories and Experiences Around Mental Health initiative, part of the We Mind Mental Health program, community members of all ages have contributed their voices. These stories, which are available on our website (jhpartners.net), highlight the many ways mental health touches our lives and remind us that no one is alone in their experiences.

Marking Mental Health Awareness Day last October, we explored the theme of mental health and aging, with volunteers writing thoughtful texts for seniors living at Saint Brigid’s Home. Our Young & Empowered Ambassadors have also shared their perspectives through our Young & Empowered Voices project, creating written pieces, artwork, a podcast and an info- graphic that reflect the realities young people face today.

For Mental Health Week this year, six community volunteers participated in a new That’s Life project, courageously sharing personal stories about their life journeys with mental health. Their words speak to resilience, vulnerability and the importance of community.

Talking about mental health openly helps break down stigma and creates space for understanding, compassion and connection. When we share our experiences and listen to others, we remind one another that changes in mental health are a normal part of being human – not something to hide or be ashamed of. It is imperative that we remember that mental health is health, and just like with our physical health, it’s okay to seek support.

Reaching out can be an important first step toward feeling better. Whether through our programs and activities offered by JH Partners promoting well-being, by contacting the mental health team at Jeffery Hale Community Services (418-684-5333, ext. 11805) or by connecting with private professional services, you don’t have to navigate it alone. If you or someone you know is looking for support and unsure where to turn, please reach out to Verity Jordan, mental health program co-ordinator at JH Partners, by email at vjordan@jhpartners.net or by phone at 581-705-2149.

This Mental Health Week, we invite you to read, reflect and share, because every story matters.
