Members of Quebec City’s Acadian community raised the Acadian flag in front of City Hall and sounded off with a traditional tintamarre to celebrate Fête de l’Acadie (National Acadian Day) on Aug. 15. Today’s Acadians are the descendants of French settlers expelled from Nova Scotia in 1755. About 1.4 million people around the world claim Acadian roots. Nearly 900,000 live in Louisiana, 300,000 in the Maritimes, 200,000 in Quebec, 40,000 in the U.S. outside of Louisiana and 20,000 in France. Aug,. 15, the day when Catholics celebrate the Assumption of Mary, was chosen as National Acadian Day in 1881. The tradition of raising the Acadian flag and hosting a tintamarre (noisy, festive procession) and picnic at Quebec City Hall to mark the “quinze aout” began in 2023. (Photo by Cassandra Kerwin).
