Wednesday, May 21 – The 31st annual Espoir Michel-Sarrazin 5K Run takes place in the streets of Sillery. The event, organized by the Collège mariste de Québec, has raised over a million dollars for the Fondation Michel-Sarrazin. May 21 and 22 at 5:30 p.m. – Les Violons du Roy present Satie: Morceaux choisis en forme d’hommage in the Salle D’Youville of the Palais Montcalm. The intimate evenings will be devoted to the singular universe of Erik Satie, whose emblematic works will be presented in arrangements for string ensembles. Tickets are on sale at violonsduroy.com.
May 22 at 7:30 p.m. and May 24 at 2 p.m. – Opéra de Québec presents Verdi’s Il Trovatore at the Grand Théâtre. For details and tickets, visit operadequebec.com/en. See article in this edition.
May 22 to June 7 – Festival Carrefour presents 17 days of live arts in Quebec City. Discover the best of national and international creation this spring, many of them free, including Où tu vas quand tu dors en marchant…? (Where do you go when you sleepwalk) on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 to 11 p.m. starting at Place D’Youville. May 23 at 8 p.m. – The Aurian Haller Band performs at the Morrin Centre. The group mixes folk, rock and jazz for a contemporary progressive folk sound, featuring a blend of piano, acoustic guitars, pedal steel, string bass, cello, banjo, mandolin, flute and saxophone. Sunday, May 25, 9 a.m. to noon – The Catholic Women’s League of Shannon will hold their traditional Community Breakfast at the Shannon Community Centre on Gosford Road.
Sunday, May 25 at 3 p.m. – The Société de Guitar de Québec welcomes the classical guitar Duo Thémis in the Salle D’Youville at the Palais Montcalm. Florence Greugny and Alexandre Bernoud have toured festivals in Europe and around North and South America. Their concert will feature music from Spain, France, Greece, Brazil and Quebec, mixing great classics with contemporary creations. Friday, May 30 at 7 p.m. – It’s Classic Movie Night at Chalmers-Wesley United Church, 78 Rue Ste-Ursule. This month’s movie is the 1953 American film noir thriller Niagara, starring Marilyn Monroe, Joseph Cotten and Jean Peters. Admission $5 (cash only). Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with cartoons and newsreels of the day before the main feature. There is a snack bar with freshly popped corn, soft drinks and candy.
Saturday, May 31 at 7:30 p.m. – Les Rhapsodes choir, joined by members of the choir of the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, presents Cent voix pour le Québec, with poetic texts by Hélène Dorion and aerial photos by Pierre Lahoud projected on a large screen above the stage, at the Palais Montcalm. Thursday, June 5 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. – Les Violons du Roy directed by Nicolas Ellis dive into the elegance of French classicism with a program devoted to three emblematic composers. François-Joseph Gossec’s Symphony in D major rubs shoulders with Jean-Louis Duport’s virtuoso Cello Concerto No. 6, featuring French cellist Raphaël Pidoux. It concludes with an orchestral suite featuring excerpts from operas by Jean-Philippe Rameau. Tickets are available at violonsduroy.com.
June 7 & 8, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m – The 38th annual DécouvrArts de Cap Rouge festival, organized by the Société Arts et Culture de Cap-Rouge, is held at the foot of the famous train trestle on Rue St-Félix and along Chem. de la Plage Jacques Cartier. For details, visit festivaldecouvrarts.ca.
Sunday, June 8 at 11 a.m. – Chalmers-Wesley United Church and Église Unie Saint-Pierre celebrate the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of the United Church of Canada with a joint worship service in their shared church (78 rue Sainte-Ursule). A reception will follow in the lower hall. All are welcome.
June 12-14, Thurs. noon-8 p.m., Fri. 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Sat. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. – The annual SNACS Entrepreneurs Book Fair takes place at Quebec High School, 945 Ave. Belvédère. Donations of good-quality books and games can be dropped off at the front entrance of the school during school hours before the sale. Saturday, June 14 at 1 p.m. – St. Patrick’s CWL Council will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in McMahon Hall of St. Patrick’s Church at 1145 de Salaberry with a traditional CWL Afternoon Tea (scones with jam and clotted cream, coronation sandwiches, desserts) with guest speaker Dr. Cory Labrecque, the provincial Spiritual Advisor and a viewing of the archives, followed by Mass at 4:00 in St. Patrick’s Church.
