International Snow Sculpture award winners

Eleven teams shaved, sculpted, and smoothed snow from sunup to sundown to try to win top honours in the Winter Carnival’s Telus International Snow Sculpture contest. Creativity and likeness to the sketch submitted were the top criteria considered during the Board’s judging. Winners were announced on Sunday, February 5.

Bonhomme helps Canadian Coast Guard celebrate 50th anniversary

On Friday, February 3, Bonhomme Carnaval dropped in the Quebec City Coast Guard station’s helicopter hangar to honour the Canadian Coast Guard’s 50th anniversary. While there, the Winter Carnival celeb gleefully received the symbolic key to the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Titanic Talk

During a recent meeting of Irish Heritage Quebec, John O’Connor gave a talk on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. The talk was accompanied by some 80 slides in a PowerPoint Presentation. Particular emphasis was put on Quebec’s connections to the disaster.

Cinéma Cartier and Château Frontenac honour 60th anniversary of Hitchcock in Quebec City

To celebrate the 60th year since the world-famous movie director and master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock came to Quebec City, Director Michel Savoy created the Hitchcock Film Festival to be held at the Cinéma Cartier where Hitchcock’s movie I Confess was first shown. The Festival will be devoted exclusively to the great British artist.

The pleasures of skating outdoors

Last Thursday I skated on the 400-meter Gaetan Boucher oval in Sainte-Foy on a sunny winter’s day just perfect for the sport. On my first circuit I noticed a stretch of ice on the outside of one of the curves that was untouched by skate grooves, the other skaters having apparently veered away from it to cut the corner short.

CÉGEP Champlain-St.Lawrence excels in Math Competition

St. Lawrence College math students performed extremely well in the 2011 Canadian Senior Math Contest. The SLC team won their zone championship and finished fourth in the province of Quebec.

Open House at HMCS Montcalm


The Canadian Naval Reserve Division HMCS Montcalm, located at Pointe-à-Carcy in Quebec City’s Old Port, opened its doors to welcome visitors and prospective recruits on Saturday, February 4. The Commanding Officer, Étienne Landry, gave the QCT a guided tour of the building and described the many training facilities and activities which take place there.

Even though those watching the 58th edition of the Winter Carnival Ice Canoe Races might have had cold feet while lining the the Quebec waterfront, the competition out on the shifting ice of the St. Lawrence River was hot! There were 46 ice canoe teams in three different categories - Men’s Elite, Women’s Elite and Sport.

Voice of English-speaking Quebec teams up with YES

The Voice of English-speaking Quebec has been supporting the region’s English-speaking community for over twenty years through a variety of initiatives. This year, they are welcoming Youth Employment Services (YES) as a partner and together they plan to provide sustainable English-language services to support Quebec’s entrepreneurs.
