Headed to Guatamala

We are Apoyo Guatemala, a group of 20 students from the social science program at Cegep Lévis-Lauzon. With the help of the social science department we have built a humanitarian aid project that will take place from May 31 until June 23.

SLC launches P. W. Sims Business Program

From the first floor of the former Price building, Cegep Champlain-St. Lawrence director Jean Robert officially launched the P. W. Sims Business Program last Monday.

“This was the first skyscraper in Quebec City, in the 1930s,” said Robert. ”You’re in the [former] bank; there’s the vault. This building cost $1 million in 1929.”

Quebec historian to receive community award from St. Patrick’s Society of Montreal

It would not be a stretch to say that no one knows more about the history of the Irish in Quebec than Marianna O’Gallagher, the 2008 recipient of the St. Patrick’s Society Community Award. The Quebec City resident will be honoured at the Annual Luncheon in Montreal on March 17.

Quebec City artist Tom White has been painting his eggs during the 40 days of Lent for the past 35 years. He begins “when the sap rises in the spring,” he explained, “when life comes back to the earth.” White’s eggs are colourful and feature friendly faces and animals. “I always sign them first; if I don’t, I have no place.” This year’s eggs are signed Quebec 400.

Author Mélanie Watt charms kids of all ages

Some 22 children and a few adults snuck out to La Maison Anglaise last Saturday to meet Mélanie Watt, author of the Scaredy Squirrel series of books for kids. Watt signed books for fans who stood in line to speak with her. She read her latest book, Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach. There was even a beach for the children to sit on, complete with an inflatable palm tree.

Valcartier’s Irish roots are rising up! The community is celebrating this week with the launch of Ireland in Quebec, a CD featuring accordionist Keith Corrigan, singer and fiddler Jimmy Kelly, fiddler Lisa Ornstein, guitarist André Marchand and pianist Nick Hawes.
