This studio photograph of Mohandas K. Gandhi was taken in London in 1931.

This street was named in honour of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), lawyer, political leader, and spiritual guide who fought for the independence of India. He was commonly known as “Mahatma,” meaning “great-souled” or “venerable,” or simply as “Bapu,” meaning “father” in several Indian dialects.
