A rainbow arches over a row of trailers that house asylum seekers in the Skaramagas refugee camp, near Athens, Greece.

The port of Skaramagas, on the outskirts of Athens, is an unexpectedly beautiful and welcoming place. People chat and eat falafel in heated tents a few feet from the blue-green waters of the Gulf of Elefsina, which flows out into the Aegean Sea. On the other side of the bay, purple-grey snow-capped mountains rise in the distance.
