Perfect Weekend for the Lions

This past weekend, the St. Lawrence Lions had 4 of its intercollegiate teams in action, competing in 6 games, all WINS!!!!

First on Friday night, it was the battle of the Champlain’s, as the AAA Lady Lions played host to the St. Lambert Cavaliers.  Earlier in the week, the team had live through some turmoil with a change in coaches.  Donald Lamousnery took over the leadership of the team during the week.   The girls responded extremely well to the change and were definitely ready to duel with their Champlain counterparts from Montreal.  The Lady Lions started the game on fire, taking a 10 point lead halfway through the first quarter.  The Cavaliers were not to be outdone.  The visitors came back in the second quarter, taking advantage of their size advantage, controlling the rebounds and putting more pressure defensively.  At the half St. Lambert was up 31-29.  The Lady Lions came out running in the second half, taking the lead in the early moments of the third quarter. The team kept the momentum in the fourth quarter, leading by as much as 20 points.  Final score Lady Lions 71-St. Lambert 52.  Four Lions scored in double digits. Catherine Crête led the way with 17 points and 7 rebounds, while Jessica Léger helped out with 15, Catherine Morin 12 and Alexandra Gareau10.

On Sunday, The Lady Lions were on the road, heading to John Abbott College to duel with the Islanders.  The team started the game a little overconfident.  The Islanders took it to them right off the start and forged an 11-point lead going into halftime.  However, the Lions came back strong in the second half, chipping away at the deficit.  The Lady Lions finally took the lead halfway through the fourth quarter, and narrowly escaped with a 58-57 win.  Catherine Crête led the team in scoring with 15 points, Catherine Morin chipped in with 14 and Marie-Pier Chandonnet had 9.  The Lady Lions now head to Sherbrooke this Friday to try and extend their winning streak.  Their next home game is this Sunday, at 1 pm as they will host Montmorency.

The Lions men’s hockey team also had two regular season games during the weekend.  They first played host to Harrington College on Saturday.  Special teams were the highlight of the game for the home team scoring 4 goals on 7 powerplay occasions, while successfully killing 9 of Harrington’s 10 powerplays.  Even in shorthanded situations, the Lions were in control of the game.  Five different Lions participated in the scoring; Vincent Clément, Francois Fortin, Jean-Philippe Sansfaçon, Hubert Joncas and Dominic Lampron each scored one goal for the Lions.  Thierry Tremblay was once again solid in nets stopping 26 of the 27 shots he faced.

The next day, the Lions headed for Sorel to battle victory with, what many consider the most complete team in the league, the Sorel Rebels.  Sorel got out of the gates quickly, scoring 2 goals in the first two minutes.  The Rebels looked well rested since they had not played in seven days, while the Lions had just come off the ice 18 hours before.  The Lions found the energy necessary to come back in the second and third period to come away with a 6-4 win.  Simon Cyr-Rochette led the way offensively with three goals.  The other goals for the Lions came from Jean-Philippe Sansfaçon, Simon Auger and Dominic Lampron.  Thierry Tremblay rebounded after the 2 quick goals at the beginning of the game, stopping 31 of the 33 shots he face after the second goal.  The Lions now have next weekend off, as their next games will be in Sorel during the second league showcase held November 28-29.  Their next home game is scheduled for December 5th as the Lionel-Groulx Nordiques will be the visitors at Acti-Vital Arena.

The 2 other Lions wins came from our AA men’s and our A Women’s basketball teams. The men had no problem beating Rivière-du-Loup on Sunday.  The Lions took an early lead and never looked back winning the game by a score of 93-52.  Francis Deslauriers led the way in scoring with 30 points.  Yan Genois and Francis Côté added 14 each while Antoine Richard scored 12.  Next game for the Lions is this Sunday 3 pm, as they will host Limoilou at St.Lawrence.  Our A women’s basketball team was also on the road, visiting the Trois-Rivieres Diablos.  After a tight first half, the Lady Lions took control of the game in the second half, coming out with a 44-28 win.  Jane Stairs led all scorers with 10 points, while Tania Gagnon and Marie-Pascale Lessard each scored 8.  Next game for our A women’s basketball team is also this coming Sunday at 5 pm as the Lafleche Dragons will be the visitors.
