JHCS Volunteer Appreciation invitations are in the mail

National Volunteer Appreciation Week is fast approaching. If you volunteered with Jeffery Hale Community Services (JHCS) over the past year, you should soon receive an invitation in the mail. Our volunteers are in for a special treat this year. We have joined forces with the Quebec Art Company to offer JHCS volunteers an evening of tribute along with a private production of George Bernard Shaw's comedy Arms and the Man on Thursday, April 16, 2009.

The theme of this year's volunteer appreciation week is From Compassion to Action. Volunteers provide the passion and creative energy that fuels innovative programs and services around the globe. Each year an estimated 12 million Canadians give generously of their volunteer time, energy and skills to enrich the lives of others. Volunteer action is essential to the social fabric of community life. Quebec City's English-speaking community has profited from a legacy of active volunteerism over the past 400 years and this torch still burns brightly at Jeffery Hale.

Volunteers from a variety of cultures and backgrounds play a vital role in the services offered by Saint Brigid's - Jeffery Hale Hospital. Our Community Services program makes a huge effort to incorporate the special touch of caring volunteers in the delivery of health and social services in English. In fact, our volunteer database is bulging with names of men and women who actively help us deliver programs that are the envy of region. These men and women benevolently contributed nearly 5,000 hours of service in the past year. Their acts of kindness are too vast to recount entirely but include the following:
• Delivery of frozen meals to homebound seniors
• Preparation of income tax forms for those with low incomes
• Sewing book bags to help encourage family story time
• Telephone Check In, and friendly calls and visits to ensure the well-being of seniors
• Board of Directors participation
• Entertaining preschoolers while their parents take a break from parenting
• Expert guest speakers who share their knowledge with new parents
• Moms' Nite-out organizers, who plan events to help get new moms out of the house and involved in the community
• Preparation of craft materials for kids, seniors and caregivers
• Christmas Hamper assembly and delivery to those in need
• Luncheon service to clients attending our Day Centre program
• Assisting special needs students with home work
• Accompanying seniors to medical appointments or the grocery store

This annual appreciation event is a special way for Community Services staff to highlight the valuable contribution volunteers make to local health and social service programs. Invited guests are required to reply by April 9. If you volunteered with JHCS in the past year but you do not get your invitation in the next two weeks, please call our Community Organizer (418 684-5333, ext. 1539) to confirm your presence. Unfortunately, we've had some technical difficulties with out volunteer database recently and as a result we may have inadvertently lost some files.

We look forward to seeing you on April 16. If you did not receive an invitation, because you haven't volunteered in the past year, however, please visit our website at and peruse our Volunteer Services section. We will be delighted to help you find a volunteer opportunity suited to your abilities, schedule and passions.
