In high school football action, the St. Patrick’s High Junior football team lost a heartbreaker to the Blizzard du Séminaire Saint-François 16-14, in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures on Oct. 5, after three straight wins to start the season.

The loss puts the Junior Fighting Irish tied for sixth in the Eastern Conference, with two games remaining in the regular season.

St. Pat’s hockey teams open 2019-20 season with three wins in five

The St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish hockey teams started the 2019-20 season in the Ligue de Hockey Préparatoire Scolaire (LHPS) on a winning note. All their games were played at the Complexe Honco in Lévis on Oct. 4 and 5.

The Under 15 majors (U15) split their first two games of the year while the Under 17 (U17) majors lost their third game of the weekend after winning two matches.

Rookie Thomas Bolduc leads Laval in easy win over Concordia

The Université Laval Rouge et Or football team, led by first-year student Thomas Bolduc as quarterback, routed the Concordia University Stingers 74-0 in front of 9,151 fans at the Stade Telus on Oct. 6.

Bolduc, who made his second start in a row, completed 23 of his 30 passes for 252 yards.

St. Pat’s hockey teams preparing for another season

The St. Patrick’s High School hockey teams will start their third season in the Ligue de Hockey Préparatoire Scolaire (LHPS) on Oct. 4, at the Complexe 2 Glaces Honco in Lévis.

The LHPS (Quebec’s version of the American hockey prep school league) is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

The St. Patrick’s Junior Fighting Irish football team defeated the Dragons from the Polyvalente de Saint-Georges, 20-9, on Sept. 29. The victory is the third for the Junior Irish in as many games. On Sept. 21, they took care of the Arsenal from Académie Saint-Louis, 23-7.

SLC’S Élizabeth Labbé wins gold at RSEQ golf championship

CEGEP Champlain–St. Lawrence golfer Élizabeth Labbé won the gold medal at the Réseau du Sport Étudiant du Québec golf championship played on Sept. 28 and 29 at the Club de Golf Lorette, in Loretteville.

A light breeze kept Quebec City cool on the mild and sunny morning of Sept. 13. The racecourse, which starts and finishes in front of Place George-V, gave the international cyclists quite a challenge in the 10th Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec.

Carabins stop Rouge et Or’s winning streak at 14

The Université Laval Rouge et Or football team saw their winning streak stop at 14 on Sept. 14, when they lost 23-18 to the Carabins of the Université de Montréal on the Carabins’ home field. This was the first time in their last six meetings that the Rouge et Or lost to the Carabins.

The Quebec Remparts will start the 2019-20 season with two games on the road this week.

On Sept. 20 in Victoriaville, the Remparts will take to the ice for the first time this season, against the Tigres.

The next day, Sept. 21, the team nicknamed the Diables Rouges will go further west; they’ll be travelling to Drummondville to play the Voltigeurs in an afternoon contest.

Irish Juniors kick off the 2019 campaign with an impressive win

The St. Patrick’s High School Fighting Irish Junior football team started the 2019 season on the right foot with an impressive 51-22 win over the Centaures from École secondaire La Courvilloise of Beauport. The game was played on Sept. 13 in Beauport.

The St. Patrick’s High School junior football team will hit the field for the first time this season when they visit École secondaire La Courvilloise in Beauport, on Sept.13. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Centaures lost their first game last week while the Fighting Irish benefited from a bye. Hopes are high for the team composed of Secondary 2 and 3 students.

St. Lawrence College gets first-ever points in men’s soccer

The CEGEP Champlain–St. Lawrence Lions men’s soccer team took to the field for the very first time this past weekend, playing two games within 24 hours in the Réseau du Sport Étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) college division.

There was a mixed soccer team in previous years. This is the first all-male soccer team at St. Lawrence.

Concordia simply no match for the Rouge et Or football team

The Université Laval Rouge et Or football team made a solid statement on Sept. 7, when it crushed the Concordia University Stingers 41-6, in the Réseau du Sport Étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) conference.

The Rouge et Or began the game on a strong note and did not give the Stingers a single chance to catch up.

From Aug. 21 to Sept. 1, for the 30th year, Mont Sainte-Anne was overrun by mountain bike athletes and enthusiasts from all over the world. Ski and snowboard trails were transformed into rugged and rocky racecourses for the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships.

Rugby and soccer seasons underway at Université Laval

Université Laval’s rugby and soccer teams started the 2019 season on a positive note last week, with three wins for the three different teams.

The women’s rugby team, looking to be one of the top teams in U Sports, crushed the Carleton University Ravens 52-0 Aug. 31 at Stade TELUS-Université Laval.

The Quebec Bataillon, of the Quebec Major Junior Football League, suffered their second loss in two games on Aug. 31. Playing their first-ever road game, the Bataillon were no match for the Ottawa Junior Riders, who finished 34-2. The Bataillon will be looking to win their first home game on Sept. 7, when they host the South Shore Junior Packers from Greenfield Park.

Alex and Pierre Harvey trade skis for mountain bikes

From Aug. 20 to Sept. 1, the ski resort on Mont Sainte-Anne was transformed into mountain-bike heaven, with international, national and local elite and amateur athletes taking on the bumpy course. On the opening weekend, mountain bikers attacked the legendary track for the 17th Velirium and the 27th UCI Masters World Championships.

The QCT recently learned that there will be a “new look” for the CEGEP Champlain–St. Lawrence logo and the various team uniforms in the near future.

Laval crushes Sherbrooke 41-10 in season opener at home

The Université Laval Rouge et Or football team began the post-Hugo Richard-Mathieu Betts era with a resounding 41-10 victory over the Université de Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Aug. 25. A crowd of fewer than 9,000 spectators witnessed the defending Vanier Cup champions win at Stade TELUS-Université Laval.

The Club de Rugby de Québec (CRQ) men’s rugby team could not duplicate the success of their female counterparts. In the Rugby Quebec Super League final, played at Concordia University in Montreal on Aug. 24, the CRQ was no match for the Town of Mount Royal Rugby Football Club and was easily defeated 41-12. The game marked the end of the 2019 season for the Rugby Quebec Leagues.

New colours and new coaches for the St. Lawrence Lions

The CEGEP Champlain–St. Lawrence Lions will have a new logo, new colours and new coaches starting this fall for the upcoming season. “The logo and colours are so popular that we have ordered more to answer the demands of the students, coaches and teachers,” said Vincent-Jean Dubé, the student activity counsellor.

The Quebec Capitales of the Can-Am Baseball League are in the final stretch of the 2019 season.

As of Aug. 18, the Capitales are in last place, one game behind Ottawa and six games behind the Rockland Boulders, who are in fourth position and the last playoff spot.

Rouge et Or to defend the RSEQ title in their 25th season

The Université Laval Rouge et Or football team will be working hard to defend their title in the Réseau du Sport Étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) and the Vanier Cup, won on their home turf last season, in the team’s 25th year.

Remparts win first pre-season game as they trim the roster

The Quebec Remparts got their first win of the 2019 pre-season as they edged the Rimouski Océanic, 3-1, in Rimouski on Aug. 18.

After a goal by Luka Verreault of Océanic, the Remparts got their first goal in the second period from the stick of Nathan Gaucher. Derek Plouffe-Dubé and Japanese player Yu Sato completed the score for the Remparts.

Two Quebec women’s rugby teams are provincial champions

On a hot and humid Saturday, Aug. 17, Rugby Québec held the provincial championships at the Académie Saint-Louis field in Quebec City. The Club de Rugby de Québec (CRQ), which hosted the event, had their three women’s teams in different finals.

St. Pat’s football teams to leave the Plains of Abraham field

A long-standing tradition is coming to an end for St. Patrick’s High football teams, as they will no longer play their games on the Plains of Abraham sports field. Instead, for 2019, the three Fighting Irish football teams will play their home games at the Gérard-Chiquette field of Patro Charlesbourg.

Laval men’s basketball team stands up to NCAA players

The Université Laval men’s basketball program showed its American counterparts that they will not be intimidated.

The Rouge et Or lost 79-76 to the Quinnipiac University Bobcats from Hamden, Connecticut, in a spectacular game on Aug. 10 at the Amphithéâtre Desjardins of the Université Laval sports pavilion.

$450,000 raised at the 11th Pro-Am Gagné-Bergeron

The Videotron Centre was the scene of the 11th annual Pro-Am Gagné-Bergeron, on Aug. 8. Some 10,000 hockey fans were in attendance for the annual charity hockey game.

It’s time for the eighth Sleeman Boot Camp

The eighth edition of the Sleeman Boot Camp takes place on Aug. 9 and 10 the PEPS at Université Laval.

Organized by former NHL and Quebec Remparts goaltender Cédrick Desjardins and his friend Daniel Blouin, the Sleeman Boot Camp is attended by only 60 professional players, today’s up-and-coming stars, divided into six teams, to play in a pre-training camp tournament.
