A chance meeting with a black-crowned night heron

This black-crowned night heron looks as if it’s having a bad hair day! Notice the long white feathers on the back of its head, indicating the bird is sexually mature. There is no great difference in size or colour between males and females of the species.

I was paddling my kayak slowly on the Cabano River in Témiscouata, my camera tucked safely away in its waterproof bag. Enjoying the scenery on a beautiful sunny day, I was hoping to encounter some ducks with their ducklings or, if I was lucky, maybe a green heron.
