Canada takes first step to address plastic pollution

Environmental groups urge the federal government to move quickly to finalize a meaningful ban on non-essential single-use plastics by the end of 2021. It is estimated that over eight million tons of plastic waste are dumped into the ocean every year.

Environmental groups applauded Canada’s decision, announced on May 12, to list “plastic manufactured items” on Schedule 1 under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). They now urge the federal government to move quickly to finalize a meaningful ban on non-essential single-use plastics by the end of 2021.
