Gaetan Boucher in 1982. The oval rink in Sainte-Foy is named in his honour.

Speed skating has come a long way since its debuts in Scandinavia and Holland in the 16th century. At first, caribou bones were attached to boots; steel blades were designed by a Scotsman in 1592. Now, modern boots are made with Kevlar or carbon material and blades of Rockwell numbered steel have become the trend.

It was during the 1924 Olympics that speed skating was recognized.
