The first Winter Carnival held in Quebec City took place from Jan. 29 to Feb. 3, 1894. The event was organized on the initiative of Frank Carrel, editor of the Quebec Daily Telegraph. The Ice Palace was built on the ramparts between the Esplanade and the Parliament Buildings. They certainly didn’t skimp on the size of the ice blocks in those days. The finished structure was seven storeys high!

The first Quebec City Winter Carnival was inaugurated on Monday, Jan. 29, 1894. Governor General and Lady Aberdeen had been invited as guests of honour for the occasion, but a major storm delayed their departure from Ottawa.
