The story behind Rue des Hospitalières
Rue des Hospitalières is named after the Hospitalière (or Hospitaller) nursing sisters who, in 1639, founded the first hospital in New France.
A joyful moment for a historian
Last year, as I was working on the history of the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph, I came across a most surprising photograph. In the August 28, 1943, edition of the newspaper, president Major Gwyllym Dunn and editor-in-chief Arthur Penny were shown holding the draft copy of the original text of the Declaration of Quebec.
Drawn to Quebec: Fireflies light up the night
"Through the whole land did shew themselves an infinite swarme of fierie wormes flying in the ayre, whose bodies make such a shew and light, as if every twigge or tree had been a burning candle.” Sir Francis Drake recorded this description of fireflies in 1577, but he could have been writing this summer.
What is a firefly?
Festival Opéra de Québec: fifth edition and still going strong
The first year the Festival Opéra de Québec was organized, the board members were not sure how long it would survive. The event has to compete with a variety of musical genres (for example the Festival d’Été, which in 2011 featured megastar Elton John), and it has been an uphill battle.
Bordeaux wine, food galore at the Pavillon des Épicuriens
Quebec City is preparing to host the third annual French wine festival, Bordeaux fête le vin à Québec, from August 27 to 30. One new feature this year will be the 11-themed meal, each theme with its own wine combination, offered by the Restaurant 47e Parallèle at the Pavillon des Épicuriens.
Domaine à l’Héritage gardens are worth the trip
If you and your guests are feeling jaded with the sites within our beautiful Old City walls or tired of the noise of our lively festivals and concerts, I’d like to suggest an exquisite outing to balance the score.
