The ups and downs of Quebec City’s staircases

The Passage du Roi, the newest staircase in Quebec City, passes between two buildings from Côte de la Montagne down to Place Royale.

The topography of the river sides of Quebec City’s Upper Town results in two diametrically opposed arrangements for access to the lower district. The slope facing the St. Charles River is gentle and favours the use of hills. Along the St. Lawrence, the gradient is steep and requires a series of staircases to reach the top.
