Act 1 opens with Ariel swinging from the La Scala chandelier, canvas waves breaking across the tilted stage with Alonso, King of Naples, (Gregory Schmidt) and his crew when they wash up on the island shore where Prospero, the usurped Duke of Milan, (Rod Gilfry) has been living with his daughter Miranda, (Julie Boulianne).

Quebec City is now part of world opera history as The Tempest, composed by Thomas Adès in 2004 for Covent Garden and now staged by Robert Lepage, made its remarkable world premiere on July 26, 2012.
