Summer Notes activities and events

Outdoor Opera Concerts presented by the Ville de Québec and l’Opéra de Québec. A series of ten summer concerts start on July 6, and continuing through August 3. Five concerts will take place each Tuesday at 12 noon at the Maison Hamel-Bruneau (2608 chemin Saint-Louis, Sillery), and five will take place Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at the Maison Tessier-dit-Laplante (2328 avenue Royale, Beauport). Free entry. Each concert lasts sixty to seventy minutes. Bring your own chair and lunch (for the noon concerts), and an umbrella if either the sun is shining or it looks like rain. These concerts feature singers from the Quebec City region. Judith Bouchard and Claire Pascot, sopranos; Véronik Carrier and Élaine Rioux, mezzos-sopranos; Philippe Gendron and Kevin Geddes tenors ; Robert Huard and Réal Toupin, basses. Lise Lachance, pianiste. They will present varied programs coming from musical comedies, operettas and opera.

Chamber Music Concert series at St. Pétronille Church on Île d’Orleans from July 15 to August 19. Thursday evenings at 8:30pm, just as the sun is setting over Quebec City, drive over to the island listen to the music of a quartet of guitars, bass and accordion, or a string quartet, or a pianist, or vocal soloists. Tickets $30.

Wednesday, July 7:  after sundown - Cinema under the Stars at the Parc Roland-Beaudin (corner or Quatre-Bourgeois and Route de l’Église, Saint-Foy) “Le Chasseur de Primes” (VF of “The Bounty Hunter”) starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. In case of rain, cancelled. Bring your own chair.

Thursday, July 8:
 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tai Chi workshop at the Maison Hamel-Bruneau, 2608 chemin Saint-Louis, Sillery.

7:00 p.m. – Carl the Magician, a show for young people at the Champigny Community Centre, 7519 boul Wilfrid-Hamel.

8:30pm - Alexandre Poulin, historical story teller, this young author/composer/actor presents a show filled with music, history and poetry! In case of rain, in the Salle Albert-Rousseau, 2410 chemin Saint-Foy.

Friday, July 9: 7:00 p.m.- Les Chauves-Sourient (The Smiling Bats?!) A concert of pure Québécois songs from the 1970s with a wink at American folk music. Good weather or bad, at the Parc Nautique de Cap-Rouge, 4155 ch. de la Plage-Jacques-Cartier

Saturday, July 10:
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. - Activites on the life of First Nations People – Medicinal Plants. Native people will present interactive activities for the family including a guided visit to the site of an archeological dig, at the Maison des Jésuites de Sillery, 2320 chemin du Foulon.

8:00 p.m. – Trio MJK – Couleurs tsiganes (Gypsy Colours) A festive voyage presenting musical traditions of France, Turkey and Central Europe, at the Expo-théâtre de la Visitation, 814 route de l’Église (corner of chemin Sainte-Foy).

Sunday, July 11:
4:00 p.m. – Karim Saada presents traditional Arab music (châabi, haouzi, gnawa and andalou) of his home country, integrated with western rhythms and instruments, at the Maison des Jésuites de Sillery, 2320 chemin du Foulon.

8:00 p.m. – Ensemble La Chamaille presents a concert of vocal Italian baroque music from Monteverdi to Vivaldi as well as extracts of Italian operas by Handel.
