Avenue McCartney begins just west of the Château Bonne-Entente, where Chemin Sainte-Foy divides, and runs as far as Rue Alain, where it ends and merges with Chemin Sainte-Foy again. Rue McCartney is a busy thoroughfare, carrying traffic westward to Cap-Rouge. The housing consists mostly of multiple-dwelling units.

Avenue McCartney in the Sainte-Foy district of Quebec City was named in honour of the McCartney family, who farmed in this area for several decades. Norman McCartney, born in 1900, served on the board of directors of the Sainte-Foy Protestant School Commission for many years.
