SPRING SING-ALONG MESSIAH

at Chalmers-Wesley United Church

The Sing-Along Messiah is an annual event which started at Chalmers-Wesley in 1998. It is usually held on the last weekend of November to kick-off the Christmas season. This year, however, we have decided to hold it on the first Sunday after Easter. This year's Spring Sing-along will be held on Sunday, April 11, starting at 7:00 p.m.

During the Sing-Along, it is you, the audience members, who sing selections from Handel's Messiah. We encourage you to bring your score and join in the fun. For singers who do not have their own score, we have a few extras we can lend for the evening. Although we encourage everyone to participate, non-singers are also welcome to come and enjoy the event and sing along when the spirit moves them.

Each year, we invite a different director to conduct the singers. This year, we (the choir) will be led by Claude Léveillé, director of the Ensemble Polyphonia de Québec.

In addition, we have invited vocal soloists and professional musicians who will perform on organ and trumpet. Sylvain Doyon, the organist titulaire of St. Jean Baptist Church will accompany us as he has done every year since the inception of the Sing-Along at Chalmers-Wesley. Louis Larouche will play trumpet. Soprano Michelle Fountaine and tenor Philippe Gagné will sing selected arias and recitatives.

The evening starts with an hour or so of rehearsal during which time the director will review some of the more difficult passages. Following a short break, the director will lead us through the "concert" portion of the evening including solos by the invited musicians. If you would like to attend but not sing, you are more than welcome. If you are interested in observing the rehearsal, please come at 7:00 pm but if you would rather arrive closer to the start of the concert portion of the evening, arrive by 8:00pm.

There is no charge for the evening’s program, but we do strongly encourage a free-will offering of at least $10 per person to help cover our expenses for the evening. Any profits will go towards our Organ Restoration Fund.

We are looking forward to seeing you at Chalmers-Wesley United Church, located at 78 rue Ste-Ursule in Old Québec on Sunday, April 11 at 7:00 p.m.
