Mason jars have millions of uses, preserving and storing food being the most popular.

In 1795 Napoleon offered 12,000 francs to anyone who could find a new way to preserve food. He was trying to find a better way to feed his soldiers with fresh food and was ready to pay for this. To store food in those days it was either dried, smoked, salted, preserved in sugar or stored in a cool, dry place.
