Agatha Christie, author and playwright (1890-1976)

The Quebec Art Company will be performing the Agatha Christie play “Murder on the Nile” this fall and is holding auditions for the play later this week (see details in the Community Calendar or visit www.quebecartcompany.com).  Mark Lepitre will remain in the director’s chair following his success last spring with “Nude with Violin”, and he is excited have the chance to bring his skills to yet another genre of theatre.  The company targeted a classic Agatha Christie mystery for this fall’s production, and after perusing a number of her works, Lepitre settled on “Murder on the Nile” due to its simple setting (all the action takes place in the saloon of paddle steamer) and wide open possibilities as to “whodunit”. As Lepitre states, “everyone in the play has a potential motive” – thus the suspense remains until the end.  The play is loosely based on Christie’s 1937 novel “Death on the Nile”, and was first performed in Scotland in 1944 under the title of “Hidden Horizon”, opening two years later in London and New York under its current title.  Although London reviews were mixed and the play only ran for 12 performances in New York, it has become one of her better known plays, being adapted for film in 1978. The play calls for a cast of 5 females and 8 males with a relatively wide range of ages and parts. The company is also looking for people interested in helping off-stage (set, costume, backstage, publicity, makeup, etc.) and encourages them to come to the auditions as well to learn how they might become involved. For those only interested in seeing the show, the dates for the performances are already set – December 2-5 – mark your calendars!
