Hidden English history in Portneuf Part I: Le rêve de Shevrikay

Musician Gaétan Morissette’s album took nearly five years to see the light of day, but its roots go back much further. Le Rêve de Shevrikay pays homage to the valiant labour and carefully maintained musical traditions of the English-speaking Irish community of Portneuf.

On Feb. 4, at first glance, the weather felt just right: cloudy sky, snowing and warmer weather than the day before. Things were a tad rougher out on the St. Lawrence River. Nearly 50 teams of ice canoe paddlers were ready to face everything in the Winter Carnival Ice Canoe Race.

The theatre of the newly-named Jeffery Hale Student Centre hosted the encore and final showings of The Philanthropist, a multimedia theatre presentation about the life of the man himself – Jeffery Hale – on Feb. 2 and 3. 

Calling all music lovers: Club musical de Québec announces exciting 2018-2019 season line-up

The new season of the Club musical de Québec began on a high note this past Sunday afternoon, with a concert by esteemed French pianist Philippe Cassard. To commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Claude Debussy’s death, the pianist performed several pieces by the late composer. Other composers whose works he performed included Edvard Grieg and Franz Liszt.

VEQ transportation to encore performance of The Philanthropist

Voice of English-speaking Québec will provide free bus transportation from Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier and Shannon to CEGEP Champlain–St. Lawrence for the performance of The Philanthropist on Saturday, Feb. 3.

* Departure at 5:30 p.m. from Valcartier Community Centre (1743 boulevard Valcartier).

* Departure at 6 p.m. from Shannon City Hall (50 rue St-Patrick).

Winter Carnival candle campaign enters final stretch

Since last November, the duchesses have been working hard to promote Winter Carnival. They completed the final stretch over the weekend of Jan. 20, as the campaign of the bougie (the iconic candle) came to an end on Sunday. All of their efforts and sales increased their odds at being crowned queen of the 64th Winter Carnival.

Visitors will have a lot to look forward to when the 2018 Quebec City Winter Carnival opens on Jan. 26. Graffiti artists, led by local artist Phelipe Soldevila, are returning to paint works of art on site at the Ice Palace during the day.
