In the middle is a photo of their father, Jean Bieler, who was president of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec from 1966 to 1968. Jean was one of the four Bieler boys who went overseas during the Great War.

In a letter from the front lines of the First World War, 19-year-old Philippe Beiler thanked his parents for their messages from home. "We live from one letter to the next," he wrote.
