Quebec youth win hockey gold

June was a month of celebration for 16 young hockey players; they won gold at the 25th annual Ottawa 67’s Minor Hockey Tournament. These eight- and nine-year-olds (all born in 1999) play AAA hockey for the Bulldog Association of Quebec. Jacob Simard of Everest Elementary and Ryan Massicotte of Holland Elementary are part of this team.

This first tournament win was a complete team effort win for all. The defensemen created an almost unbreakable wall for their opponents, allowing on average one goal per game. The forwards attacked throughout the tournament with an average of four goals per game. These elements, combined with amazing goaltending (one shutout and three one-goal games) helped to lead the team to the gold medal.

After the qualifications the Riverdogs had three wins and one loss (5 to 1, 6 to 0, 3 to 2, and 0 to 1); this put them second in their pool. In semi-final action they squared off against the Beauce Patriotes and won that game 4 to 1. Heading into the final they would play against Prince Edward Island. It was a very close game for two periods but then the Riverdogs exploded and finished off to win 6 to 3. Thank you to all the coaches, brothers, sisters, parents, other family members and friends that helped make this 11-week season such a great success! Fifteen practices, nineteen games, hard work, determination, perseverance, heart and now a gold medal! Congratulations boys!
