The St. Lawrence golf team totally dominated the recent provincial championships, finishing in first place with a cumulative score of 1198 over four rounds, 112 shots better than their closest rival, Cegep Outaouais.

Friday, September 26 brought members and friends of the Quebec High School Alumni together in Vineland, Ontario, for another wonderful round of golf.  How nice to see Barbara Boden, along with Dave and Marion Blinco and Bruce Laurie join us on this special day, all the way from Quebec City.

Fighting Irish football fit for championship year

St. Patrick’s High School Fighting Irish football teams left nothing to chance last Sunday, obliterating their respective opponents at the annual Tailgate match on the Plains of Abraham. The Senior team breezed past Rochebelle 40 to 20. The Juniors, meanwhile, took no prisoners with a stunning 32 to 0 win over Donnaconna.

Hockey Lions Kick Off Home Season on the Right Foot

Saturday night, the St. Lawrence Lions won their home opener against the Terrebonne Ulysse by the score of 8-1.

After a tightly contested first period that ended on a 1-1 score, the team stepped on the gas pedal to cruise to the win.  You could feel the nervousness in the first period; Sticks seemed heavy, passes were not precise, positioning was not very good.  Goalie Cedrick Lafrance was tested a few times in this period, but made key saves for the Lions.

“We’re in search of excellence,” said Glen Constantin, head coach of the threetime national champions Université Laval Rouge et Or football club. They seem to have found what they’re looking for; the Rouge et Or got off to a fantastic start this year with a 17 to 6 victory over the Université de Montréal Carabins on Sunday.

Ramesh Ferris stands on the doorstep of history, wearing leg braces and with the aid of crutches. In the wake of Canadian legends like Terry Fox and Rick Hansen, the 28-year-old polio survivor is hand cycling across the country to raise awareness and funds to eradicate polio from the face of the earth.

Golfers wanted for a good cause

The 18th edition of the annual Jeffery Hale Friends’ Foundation is looking for golfers to hit the links on September 15 at le Club de Golf le Grand Portneuf to help raise funds for the Jeffery Hale Hospital.

Quebec tae kwon do champions ready for Olympic fights in Beijing

For the first time since tae kwon do became an Olympic discipline at the 2000 Sydney Games, Canada will be represented in the sport by a male athlete. Sebastien Michaud from Quebec City qualified in the - 80 kg category.

Marie-Pier Beaudet, 21, breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday, July 20 when her last arrow hit the target. By winning her match against Kateri Vrakking, the archer from Lévis took the first position in the weekend’s trials and qualifi ed for the Olympic Games in a controversal turn of events.

Quebec City athletes go for gold in Beijing

On August 2, most of the Canadian Olympic team will be leaving for Beijing. The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) has selected the 331 athletes who will be attending the games. According to the COC’s website, there are six athletes from the Quebec City region who will be competing in Beijing. For the 2004 Athens Olympics, there were eight.

Quebec youth win hockey gold

June was a month of celebration for 16 young hockey players; they won gold at the 25th annual Ottawa 67’s Minor Hockey Tournament. These eight- and nine-year-olds (all born in 1999) play AAA hockey for the Bulldog Association of Quebec. Jacob Simard of Everest Elementary and Ryan Massicotte of Holland Elementary are part of this team.

Cegep Champlain-St. Lawrence held its annual sports banquet last month. Athletes were honoured for their athletic talents as well as their academic performance.

The 2008 athlete of the year award was presented to Kathleen Keller.

World Hockey Championships to win attendance bronze

The IIHF World Hockey Championships in Quebec City and Halifax has been successful thus far in attracting hockey fanatics from around province, the country and the world. The tournament is poised to become the third-best attended IIHF World Hockey Championships ever, but will unlikely beat the record set in Prague in 2004.

Cegep Champlain-St. Lawrence has found a solution to its hockey woes. The St. Lawrence Lions will be a member of the America East Hockey League (AEHL) and offer students a chance at completing their studies and playing a season of junior collegiate hockey.
