Coveney, Sister Doris (Helen Alphonsus)

Coveney, Sister Doris (Helen Alphonsus) – 87, died in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, on May 26, 2012. Born in Quebec City, QC, she was the daughter of the late Alphonsus Coveney and Helena (Kack) Coveney. She entered the Sisters of Charity-Halifax in 1943 and made her religious profession in 1946. She continued her education at MSVU and Mount Allison until 1949 attaining a B.Sc. in Home Economics. In 1971, she received a B.Ed from MSVU. Sister taught in Micmac, NS; Dorchester, MA; Patchogue, NY; and Reserve, NS for a total of 21 years. She then moved to her native Quebec in 1970 where she taught at st. Patrick’s High School for the next 10 years. She became provincial treasurer for the Sisters of Charity serving until 1988. For the next two years, she did volunteer work at St. Brigid’s Home in Quebec City, served the poor and needy at St. Francis Table in Toronto before retiring to Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse in Halifax. Sister Doris was predeceased by her sisters Alice and Maureen. She is survived by her sister Eileen Coveney, her brothers Frank (deceased Raymonde) and Charles (Jacqueline), and her nieces Linda (Graham) Forster, Ann (Alain) Pageau, and her nephew Robert (Caroline) Coveney as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews. The funeral was held Wednesday May 30th at Immaculate Conception Chapel, Caritas Residence in Halifax.
