Drawn to Quebec: A colourful season ahead

We're not quite there yet.

Most of the leaves, on most of the trees, are still vibrant, verdant, green. And yet, each time the wind blows, a handful of crimson, copper, and yellow drifts earthward.

What is it that drags those emblems of autumn to the soil, and how is it that they turn such glowing colours while the summer sun fades?
