Canadian Rangers travel to share in celebrating 400 years of history

With cheery faces, the Canadian Rangers motored their way from CFB Valcartier to Quebec City Hall for an official greeting.
Some 40 Rangers from 23 Northern communities, members of the 2nd Patrol Group, made a trek to Quebec City by snowmobile in support of its 400th anniversary.
Mixed emotions reign at CFB Valcartier
The Valcartier Garrison, just outside of Quebec City, is a hub of mixed emotion at the moment. As soldiers and families at the base prepare to welcome back 1,700 troops from tours in Afghanistan, another 100 from CFB Valcartier are getting ready to join the mission.
Horrocks succeeds Tabachnik as head of QESBA
The executive of the Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA) underwent a major shake-up this past wekeend.
Debbie Horrocks of the Riverside School Board in Montreal was elected president of the association at the organization’s annual general meeting. She succeeds Marcus Tabachnik, who served as president for the maximum allowable period of two two-year terms.
Restaurateur Luigi Sgobba dies at 79
Luigi Sgobba, co-founder of Le Continental restaurant, died on January 19 at Hôpital Hôtel-Dieu de Québec. He was 79.
In November 1956, Sgobba and his brother Angelo, along with partners Luigi Giacomello and Stephano Degan, opened Le Continental at 26 Rue St-Louis, in the former residence of the Honourable Jean-Thomas Taschereau, a Canadian Supreme Court judge.
Catchment areas unchanged
Last week the QCT reported that catchment areas, which correspond to enrolment, for Central Québec School Board’s Ste-Foy Elementary School had changed this year. In fact, they have not. They are the same as last year.
Rebels take home trophy from 95th Quebec International Bonspiel
Ontario’s Rebels were flattered by the standing ovation when they were called to accept the Quebec International Bonspiel’s top trophy.
The bonspielers celebrated the 95th edition of the weeklong event, hosted at the Château Frontenac.
The Rebels, now combined with team La Terrace, is a bit of a father-and-son tradition.
Haller to host wordcraft workshops at Morrin Centre
Poet, singer/songwriter Adrian Haller will host a four-session series on writing, Word/Craft: An Introduction to Poetry Writing and Practice, to be held on Sundays once a month from February to May at Morrin Centre. The workshops are being held in conjunction with the Quebec Writers’ Federation.

Carless in the suburbs
Who says that no one walks to the corner store for milk anymore? Just because you live in the suburbs doesn’t mean you’re stuck behind the wheel of a car.
A recent Canadian study said that folks who live outside of the city centre rely on their cars more. Perhaps this is the case for some people. But there are exceptions.
